Federated Co-operatives Limited concludes five-year agreement with ISM Canada to provide custom IT services to support FCL's retailing system

Saskatoon, SK,  August 25, 2011

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) and ISM Canada, a wholly-owned subsidiary of IBM Canada, are pleased to announce an initiative that highlights the strength of Saskatchewan-based innovation and cooperation. The dynamic new partnership will support FCL’s long-term technology requirements while providing ISM Canada (ISMC) with the opportunity to establish a business presence and office in Saskatoon.

The five-year agreement will include the provision of IT services and solutions that will help FCL advance the continuing success of 245 locally-owned retail co-operatives with an operating presence in 500 communities across Western Canada. The agreement takes effect January 1, 2012, and about 27 FCL employees are expected to accept employment with ISM Canada, and will be based at ISM Canada’s new Saskatoon office, beginning in March, 2012.

“FCL recognizes the need to ensure that we provide innovative and effective technology solutions for the co-operative retailing system (CRS), and we are very pleased that we have found an important piece of those solutions right here in Saskatchewan,” explains Scott Banda, CEO of FCL. “Our new partnership with ISM Canada allows us to continue to evolve to meet new challenges facing the CRS while at the same time emphasizing our commitment to the fair treatment of our employees and co-op’s belief in investing in the communities where we do business.”

This Saskatchewan-based solution was chosen over other options to ensure that these services and jobs remained rooted in our province—a homegrown partnership maintains critical investment in Saskatchewan and is consistent with FCL’s and the CRS’s long-standing commitment to investing in the communities in which co-operatives do business.

ISM Canada will ensure the continued provision of mainframe support to FCL, while utilizing the expertise of the new employees to develop additional mainframe support services for ISM clients in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

“ISM Canada welcomes this opportunity to work with Federated Co-operatives Limited,” said Dan McMurtry, President and CEO, ISM Canada. “We are committed to helping FCL optimize the business value from its IT investments, through employing IBM innovation, as well as proven systems and best practices.  We also look forward to expanding ISM Canada’s presence to Saskatoon, drawing on the capabilities and expertise of new employees who choose to join one of Canada’s 2011 Top 100 Employers.”

As outlined in the attached backgrounder, New agreement brings proven IT innovation and services to build future success of FCL’s Co-operative Retailing System, the agreement between FCL and ISM Canada will improve performance, system resiliency, and provide for the development of  value-added services for FCL’s member co-operatives, so they may improve services for their 1.5 million active co-op members.
